Last week I wrote about statement pieces, so this week I decided I would go in the opposite direction and give a little list of my favorite winter wardrobe basics. Here are a few of the pieces that add a little balance to my closet.
If you do not have a solid pair of black leggings, stop reading this immediately and go make the purchase. As workleisure and an emphasis on comfort becomes more common, the legging has transformed from a workout essential to an everyday essential. I pair my solid black leggings with sweaters, athleisure, graphic t-shirts, or a jean jacket. These make the perfect transition from work, to class, to the gym.
A great turtleneck can do more for you than make you look like Steve Jobs. One of my current favorite looks is to pair a black turtleneck with a neon pink blazer, black jeans and heeled boots. The turtleneck is an easy way to elevate an outfit and pairs well with many different pieces.
As fashion trends shift more towards androgyny, the girlfriend jean has gained popularity. The loose gripping around the legs allows for a comfortable range of motion. This style also transfers well between a day at work, an afternoon with the girls, or a more casual night out at bars.
4) The Blazer
As I mentioned above, clothing styles are becoming more centered around comfort. However, there is still room for the blazer in this new comfort focused wardrobe. A blazer can be layered over a sweatshirt or graphic t-shirt to add a little pop to a casual outfit.
The chunky boot is the best thing to happen to casual shoe wear since Filas reentered the mainstream market. If you enjoy a nice height boost but hate being uncomfortable walking around all day in heels, the chunky boot is a must have. My current favorite boot is a black, lace-up heeled boot with a chunky sole.
This is slightly cheating on the winter wardrobe, because this piece works well in all seasons. The lace-trim camisole can be pared with a wide variety of outfits, from blazers and heels to skirts and leather jackets to jeans and sneaks.
This piece is very popular this season and is currently one of the cutest ways to stay warm. It can be added to any outfit, from athleisure to business casual.
Puffy sleeves elevate any normal long sleeve blouse. Whether the sleeve be mesh, tulle, polyester, or leather it is a great piece to add to your wardrobe. This top can be paired with jeans, skirts, dress pants, or basically any bottom that is more formal than leggings.
This piece can be dressed down with chunky sneakers or dressed up with over-the-knee boots. It is easy to throw on and can be worn in a variety of different settings.
The one thing I will never leave the house without. The larger the glasses, the happier I am. A pair of sunglasses can tie an outfit together or make their own statement.
