Ever since the establishment of material goods and social gatherings, social hierarchy has existed. I truly believe that even cavemen had their own versions of cotillion and Birkin bags that were used to indicate one’s position on the social ladder.

However, social hierarchy would not be complete without a beautiful group of leading ladies to tell everyone what to wear and where to go. Thus, the socialite is born.

The term socialite has been used since 1928, when the Social Register was published to highlight the well-connected, wealthy families in the United States. Basically, it was used to tell commoners who they should aspire to be like.

Over the years, the term has evolved from something used to describe the wives of royalty to

a term that can be used to describe the trust-fund baby offspring of the world’s richest men or celebrities who have a knack for partying (think Serena from Gossip Girl).

Socialites exist in style pages and tabloid magazines to influence the masses about what designers are in and the hottest spots to be found. But, as we transition into the full force of the digital world, it seems that this role is now performed by influencers.

Social media influencers are dominating the consumer markets. Individuals have made entire careers surrounding their presence on social media and the endorsements they get from businesses. When the average gen Z is searching for a new coffee nook, killer pair of heels or dreamy vacation spot they tend to check the Instagram account of their favorite influencer.

The change in who gen Z is paying attention to, triggers a change in who the media pays attention to. Therefore, shifting power to social media gurus. This has allowed the influencer industry to grow and blossom into the newest way to stay up to date with societal trends.

My advice to you, stay up to date with your favorite influencers, celebrities and socialites. Remember that the power is in the hands of the consumer, you decide who you want to listen to. And, when all else fails, listen to every word that Ariana Grande says.

xoxo,
